More on the iPhone
I appreciated that John spend a lot time focused on the size of the new iPhone 12's in his review. I especially liked this table of the sizes of recent phone. I switched the axis here in part because of the way tables work in notion but I also think this makes it a bit easier to compare the sizes.
11 Pro *
As a 11 Pro user currently the new 12's are both actually a tiny bit larger than my current phone but substaintally smaller than the former iPhone 11. This is promising because that phone was clearly to big for the default. In hindsight its obvious that the contortions they had to perform to get that LCD screen there made it almost imposssible to get the phone to the size they really wanted.
The fact that 12 and the 12 pro are the exact same size and both have OLED screens means that this is what Apple thinks is the right default size for most people, and I think they are right.
I on the other hand am a smaller person so I'm still leaning towards the new mini size. John didnt do the comparison since he only has the "regular" sized ones for now but here it is.
My wife still has the old SE and I've been hoping that Apple would just go back and release a phone at that size with an edge to edge screen, but sadly thats not what they did.
The new phones are all slightly thinner than the se which is quite surprising considering how thin that phone is. It is 3.8 mm wider and 7.7mm taller but without touching it that feels like a reasonably small increase and likely worth it for the mini to still seem "big enough".
The big question with it is this enough information to buy the mini next month site unseen or do I need to skip the preorder and wait to see it in a store?
Time will tell
