Creating a flexible, structured website for a grass-roots arts organization

Movement Research is a 30 year old artist-run, artist-focused organization that investigates dance and movement-based forms. Organizational classes and programming are highly diverse and occur in the spaces of partner organizations across Manhattan.

We engaged in deep research, content mapping and user flow diagramming in order to create a site that could grow with the organization. We kept the scope focused with a minimum amount of highly adaptable templates.

Streamlining calendering, creating order and hierarchy, and simplifying their content has made for deeper engagement with the site and less confusion when looking for the location of a class or class times.

Communication and flexibility were the most important and successful parts of the project. Figuring out how to work with an evolving team, addressing questions and concerns from a variety of organizational perspectives and phasing the project over time to work with their needs and budget lead to a great deal of success with the project.

Considering Movement Research’s established identity, as well as their history of printed ephemera—including photocopied flyers and 2-color printed programs—we created a new complementary typographic brand language and a sitewide color scheme that shifts when the season changes.
