Refreshing the website and online tools of a venerable arts foundation

Since 1985, Art Matters has provided grants to artists whose work seeks “to break ground aesthetically and socially,” but the organization’s digital presence was no longer in line with today’s standards.

Numerous artists have benefited from Art Matters’ support during its 30-year history. To ensure each was recognized, we rebuilt the website around online records for individual grantees, who collectively represent the organization’s rich past.

The site is a rich reference tool that will be constantly improved. By making the site fully responsive, we were able to make that experience mobile.

Working with Familiar was transformative. We have a small staff and they’ve been able to help us streamline our work so much with systems they developed. And we love the way they translate our mission into a simple, dynamic web presence. They always pick up the phone, too! — Sacha Yanow, Executive Director Art Matters

Despite grant funding being core to its mission, the tools Art Matters used to receive, evaluate, and approve grant applications were outdated. Staff had to manually enter information with no assurance that their work would be reliably stored. By designing a more efficient system, we helped an organization with limited staff achieve greater efficiency itself.

We helped Art Matters move to Salesforce, a platform that allowed them to automate their process for accepting and evaluating applications, a transition that insured their data would be routinely backed up. Salesforce also allowed us to build a custom application that furthered the Art Matters brand and improved the experience for nominators, the artists they championed, those reviewing their applications, and staff.
